solarflaring: (anxious → van was supposed to be here!)

[video feed opens to a sandy beach, waves splashing in the back and one (1) Jim Hawkins with a metal contraption looking a bit uneasy at the camera.]

Hey, do you really hafta record this?

Do you want to check the flight patterns or not? I'm not making a network post. Start it already.

Fine, fine. Just-- Stay out of the way.

Tch! Tell it to your grandmother."

[camera starts awkwardly panning out as Gokudera steps back. Jim grabs the surfer's guard-rail and runs along the waterline with it and-- up it goes! Slowly climbing and Jim looks fairly proud of himself jumping onto it. For a few minutes everything was flying and nothing hurt and once it's ten feet in the air ... it starts losing altitude oh no. The flyer starts trailing smoke and careens to the water]

Shit--fucking idiot, what scraps did you--"

[the camera jostles a bit before the feed cuts out. RUN, GOKUDERA, RUN]

[Look, something is flying and it's someone Ginny knows. Of course she's watching with utmost intent. Though, really, it looks unstable to her—Muggle technology, really, her father would love this—but there's still some fascination as... oh hey, it's flying, that's pretty awes—

Never mind.]

Jim.

Looking good, there.

[Not concerned, pssh, a water landing from ten feet? You're fine. No, she is just kind of mildly appalled.]

So what the bloody hell was that.

[Isn't she, though?]

Of what, exactly? If it was meant to fly, let me tell you, it doesn't look like something that should.

That surfer I told you about before. It would've worked but all the plans I use are back home, so I can't make the same one. Just--

Ignore it? Sorry, can't ignore something that involves flying. I told you, it's a hobby of mine too.

[This redhead looks particularly thoughtful as she sits back at her desk, eyeing something off-camera.]

How's it meant to work?

Uh. Not like that, I can tell you.

If it worked the way it was supposed to, can it maneuver better than that? Smoother?

Yeah. It's like--

It just-- Flows with you and your movements, it's like. Nothing else you've felt.

I have the broom thing, too.

[And that expression on her face, Jim? Is daring you to make fun of that.]

Considerably less support under you. Next to nothing, really, if you're used to something under your feet. But once you get past feeling like you're going to fall on your arse any second, it's brilliant.

Normal enough. We play a sport entirely on broomsticks.

[She looks quite pleased, but now she's getting an idea and, hm.]

What about you, with your surfer thing?

Huh.

It's a pretty big thing back home. Not on Montressor since... But most solar surfers are pretty expensive so.. I dunno, I just started building my own instead.

Most professional racing brooms're worth... probably your weight in gold. I completely understand.

[Yeah, and while we're at it, let's not talk about the whole... not having much back home, too.]

I never had my own broom until here. Someone made it for me and then I tried making another one. So does that mean you're going to try again?

You bet I'm trying again. Once I figure out what went wrong, I'll give it another try. If I can get one working right, did you wanna see?

[CRASHING IS PART OF LEARNING, JIMBO.]

I'm just curious to see how it handles in the air. I'm biased towards brooms but that doesn't mean I like to give other things a go, too. Besides, a few bruises never hurt anyone.

[Pause. Oh, hey, here comes some tact now.]

You didn't get tossed around too much, did you?

Enough, but I'm fine. Nothing a night of sleep won't fix.

[At least she has the presence of mind to look a little sheepish for having waited quite so long to ask.]

Should have asked first. Got caught up, I suppose.

[And then, there, have that quick flash of a Weasley grin.]

Better the beach than Xanadu, right? Softer landings. Maybe I ought to take my lessons there instead.
