Well, that was fun, huh? Everyone's recovering, I'm guessing. Luke? Ginny? ... Angry guy? You're all good?

With all the excitement over, we can go back to doing whatever, huh? After rebuilding some stuff, of course.

Speaking of... Uh. I've been trying to keep an eye out for stuff, but would anyone know a good place to find building materials? Like scrap metal and bolts and stuff? Either I'm looking in the wrong places or there's not much of that around. There's gotta be something after all of that, right?

Might just be me, but I'd think it's a better idea to not use metal from the things that were trying to kill us.

Oh you don't think I meant...

I wasn’t talking about using the harpies themselves… They were finding scrap metal in the City to build their nests out of.
It's just normal scrap metal.

Still something I'd probably use as a last choice.

Any other ideas?

You could try ‘Dumpster Diving’ or one of the hardware stores maybe… Unless these have been cleaned out by the harpies they might have what you need.

Is there something more specific that you are looking for?

Just some big pieces I can put together for something. Hardware stores would probably have tools I'd need, but not the materials.

They might have larger pieces of metal or know how to order them. Thankfully I haven’t had to search for any myself.

May I ask? What are you trying to build?
Would wood work? There seems to be no shortage of that here.

A glider. So wood wouldn't work for it.

[The sarcasm doesn’t go unnoticed however Eagle is far more curious about… ]

If it is for a glider then wood should work very well? It is lightweight and can be shaped easily.

Though finding a launching pad for something like that could be difficult… unless you plan to add an engine of some kind?

I've only ever used metal for mine, so I'm not sure how well wood would hold up for it.

...You know about engines?

I do know something about them… though really I have far more experience with Autozam technology. The combustion engines they use in the few vehicles they have here in the City are so different when compared to what we use at home.

That's about the same problem I've been running into. I'd only read about combustion engines as an old Earth theory that never took off.

At one point in our history we did use engines like that, but after we found a way to harness mental energy as a power source… that old technology was abandoned.

[That was interesting though.]

But, you come from a version of Earth that never developed this technology at all?

Mental energy?

Uh. Yeah, we started using solar power. A lot more efficient in the long run.

The power of one’s mind is harnessed to control machines. Sort of like how the barrier is currently being supported by taking its power from the people here.

Solar energy…
[Too bad we don’t have the time for that… But…]

How do you manage to get enough energy from just the sun’s light?

How would that even work?

[A pause while Eagle tries to ponder some non-techno babble way to explain… ]

Like a battery? The human mind can become a source of power kind of like a battery.
[This was too simple an explanation… really. ]

And depending on the power of a person’s will they can be either a really strong or really weak battery.

It… is not without its flaws.

[Which is why he now attempts to refocus this conversation. ]

Your people must have perfected some more efficient way of gathering energy from the sun if solar power is so important to your civilization. Are you able to run large Cities off of this power as well or only smaller machines?

Uh. Yeah, it's the main source of energy for pretty much the whole galaxy. Not many people use the... Fossil fuels combustion engines use anymore. They developed solar panels that absorb the sun's waves and distribute it to the machines as an electrical current.

Really? Do you know how that works?

[Meaning. ]

If you had the pieces could you build a solar energy collection unit?

I--

...

I dunno. I'd have to see if the library here has some information I'd need and refresh my memory. I've never tried building a solar panel from scratch before.

[Eagle was pretty sure that would be the answer. The City never seems to bring the mechanics. ]

A lot of the books in the library were destroyed. If you decide to try, but can’t find any information on the subject, I know some one who might have been able to make a copy of it.

Your welcome and good luck with your glider project. I look forward to seeing it’s completion.
